Are you looking for a perfect Christmas gift? Keep reading to learn about some of the most amazing pop-up books that are perfect for all ages.
Let's begin with my favorite pop-up artist: Robert Sabuda. I reviewed his incredible Dinosaurs: Encyclopedia Prehistorica back in August. You may remember how I raved on and on about the way these giant lizards seemed to come alive on every page. Mr. Sabuda worked alongside another genius, Matthew Reinhart, to create the most amazing book about these giant lizards. Every page has mini-pages on the corners of the pages that also pop-out. But I think what I love best about this book is that the intricate pop-up dinosaurs inspire the reader to learn more about these creatures. And where can you find a book that's filled with factual information? Right alongside the pop-ups inside this book! This is a book that should be on every home bookshelf!
Sabuda recently published another pop-up book that celebrates winter in the colder regions of the world. Winter's Tale places winter animals and scenery in a pop-up fashion with white and silver hues throughout. The format instantly gives off hues of frost and snow as the pop-ups include an owl in flight, foxes huddled in an ice cave and a polar bear surrounded by a reflection of a waterfall. The last page holds a surprise that will instantly warm the hearts for all readers!
And while we're on the subject of these two outstanding artists, here's another incredible pop-up by Matthew Reinhart. Cinderella: A Pop-up Fairy Tale is the perfect example of inventive pop-up science. Mr. Reinhart has magnificently portrayed the story of the poor urchin to a beautiful princess with the magic of paper. There's the page that has dancers twirling at the ball as you open the page. There's the exquisite shiny carriage being pulled by horses that seem to be prancing before your eyes. Then there's the corner pages that work magic as well. Here are just a few examples: the fat rat that turns into the coachman right before your eyes and the beautiful glass slipper that slips onto Cinderella's foot as you open the page This is a wonderment of paper magic.
Christmas in New York , by Chuck Fischer, is another pop-up book that will be a feast for your eyes. The first page glories in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Christmas Tree. Each year, this international museum decorates one of the most famous trees for the holiday. Information about this famous tree is found on the side pages that also open up. Included in this beautiful book is the nutcracker which has smaller pages opening to more information and pictures and New Year's Eve. Even if you've never visited this city before, you'll almost hear the taxes honking in the city's streets.
The Christmas Pop-up Present, by Rives and illustrated by Susan Mitchell, doesn't look, feel or even act like a book. But don't let that stop you from investigating all about this unusually shaped book. Its square box has 24 windows that either pop-out or invert, holding more pictures or text inside. The box unfolds to become a different shape and then ultimately folds back in the reverse fashion in which it started. Sounds confusing? You'll just have to behold, or hold, this unique box to discover the present deep inside.
One Red Dot, by David A. Carter, is a study of art in paper form. Mr. Carter takes advantage of pop-up engineering to demonstrate twirling, grinding, weaving and maneuvering many types of paper objects. He carries a title of the book throughout by placing a red dot hidden within the pop-up. It's difficult to write about the incredible ingenuity of this book. So suffice it to say, you'll only need one look at this book before you'll decide to buy it!
Quintessential Disney: A Pop-Up Gallery of Classic Disney Moments, by Robert Tieman, and paper engineering by the aforementioned David A Carter, is a nice collection of some of the most famous Disney animated movies. The layout of this book is quite different because it opens and closes with a magnet. The pages pop-up like a stage with each page opening from top to bottom. Included are “Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs”, “Peter Pan” and “Bambi”.
Nova The Robot: Super-Galactic Pop-up, by David Kirk, is a splash of bright and vivid color. This incredible book is based on the author's popular “Nova's Ark Fable” . There are so many inventions of this believable world that a child could spend hours and hours on this book!
I started out by mentioning the first book will need to be found on your home shelf. But if you check out any, or all, of these books, you'd better bring your checkbook! Happy gift giving!
